SCHOOL HISTORY
National Secondary School Dato' Abdul Rahman Ya'kub or its short name SMKDARY,_cc781905-bb3b-95cde 136bad5cf58d_ is the earliest Malay style school in Merlimau. Its history began in January 1965 with a student population of 282 and temporarily staying at Dang Anum School.
From January 7, 1968, this school got its own building and at that time was known as Merlimau Middle School. This school has 5 building blocks consisting of 19 classrooms, 2 Science laboratories, 4 Industrial Arts rooms, 1 library, 1 dormitory building, 1 Art Room, 1 Geography and History Room, 1 Canteen and 400 meter Track Field.
At that time the number of students had increased to 1035 people consisting of Form One to Form Four. The number of classrooms is not enough, so learning has to be conducted in two sessions. This school was inaugurated by the Malaysian Minister of Education, YB Dato Patinggi Haji Abdul Rahman on 12 September 1969. From that date the school was known as Sekolah Dato' Abdul Rahman Ya'kub, taking his name. Science stream classes were started in 1972. Early in 1973, a building block was erected consisting of 4 classrooms, 2 Science laboratories and a Home Science room. In 1974, another building block was erected containing 6 classrooms and a Science laboratory as well as a Great Hall. In 1977 a surau was established.

In May 1978, SDARY started Form 6 classes. At the same time the School Library was enlarged and APD rooms were created. In 1990, two blocks of Bangunan Gotong-royong were built adding 8 more classrooms. In 1995, a new Dormitory building with a Dining Hall was developed as well as a block for Workshops. With the transfer of the Dormitory to the New Dormitory, the ASPURY building has been renovated to become a new APD building. The old dormitory rooms have also been renovated to be used as Offices and Teacher's Rooms. Currently (1996), SDARY has 10 building blocks. SDARY also has 3 Teacher House units. It is hoped that the increasing number of building blocks will overcome the current shortage of classrooms. Finally, advance SDARY especially to fight for the ideals and aspirations of parents and the local community.
